Poor worker Sher Khan Khichi contests election for National Assembly Seat NA 167 Vehari (Punjab)
Dear Friends,
Emerging democratic process in Pakistan is creating space and environment for working class people to be part of the process. Although immediate results are not very much encouraging in terms of votes obtained by the working representative during last bye election for seats of provincial and national assembly all over Pakistan; however the election contest has inspired public opinion and impacted in way by rejecting the prevailing perception and mind frame that rich and influential people can only contest the election.
During election in last March, few working class representatives took part in bye election as ‘Awami Party Pakistan’ candidate. Among all those a peasant woman candidate Mai Jori Jamali from extremely backward area of Balochistan for provincial assembly seat, inspired public opinion a lot. She became the voice of poor and excluded Balochistan as saying that our poverty and backwardness is a question of governance not our fortune. She addressed public meetings attended by hundreds of villagers even in far flung areas.
Currently Awami Party Pakistan has fielded another candidate from working class a poor farmer She Khan Khichi as candidate for National Assembly seat NA 167 Vehari (Punjab). The polling is scheduled on May 15 Saturday. Different teams of Awami Party Pakistan supported by poor farmers are running election campaign of Sher Khan Khichi. They are approaching common people in villages and small town of Borewala as part of door to door campaign by foot, bicycle and local taxis. The party workers and activists are also collecting financial contributions from the voters of the constituency for necessary election expenses. The small contributions are more encouraging for Awami Party activists and appeal for small contributions to poor inspires a lot to poor.
During election campaign addressing the corner meetings Malik Ayub General Secretary Awami Party Pakistan, Party candidate Sher Khan Khichi, District president Ms. Lubna Ehtsham and others said that small farmers, peasants and rural workers are most vulnerable class in Pakistan and they are victim of government economic policies. They are denied from basic rights of health, education, drinking water, transport, food, clothing and shelter. They said that only committed political representation can lead the country toward peace and progress to ensure basic rights of every citizens including rural poor.
