Dear Fausto Bertinotti
Two weeks ago a Danish military force arrived in Afghanistan as a part of the ongoing NATO-operation. In the Danish Parliament The Red-Green Alliance voted against this decision because we neither believe that peace can be created in Afghanistan by means of a NATO invasion, nor do we have any confidence that the dominant NATO powers wish to secure the people of Afghanistan their real national self-determination.
Already last Sunday (July 23) the first tree Danish soldiers were wounded after a long exchange of fire with Afghan rebels. For us in The Red-Green Alliance it only confirms that the NATO operation is a step in the wrong direction and we will reinforce our demand for the Danish soldiers to be withdrawn from Afghanistan, as we demand Danish soldiers to be withdrawn from Iraq.
In this struggle it will be a serious setback, if the Italian Senate decides to continue the Italian military presence in Afghanistan with the votes from Your party, which up to now has been known and respected for its resistance to imperialist wars. It will of course be used directly against us in Denmark - and all others worldwide who oppose the NATO operation in Afghanistan - that even the Party of Rifondazione Comunista in Italy supports this invasion.
On behalf of the Executive Committee of The Red-Green Alliance we therefore call upon you to do your utmost to prevent this to happen.
Fraternally Yours
