The super-typhoon Haiyan (named Yolanda in the Philippines) just struck the Philippines, devastating especially the islands of Samar and Leyte at the centre of the archipelago. It was the most violent typhoon recorded to this day in the world, and affecting the coastal areas.
Another typhoon, named Zoraida in the Philippines, should soon be making landfall in Mindanao, more to the south.
A number of typhoons are announced to enter the country still, before the year ends.
Even if the coming cyclones will be less strong than Haiyan, the Filipino people will be experiencing a succession of humanitarian disasters and accumulating its disastrous effects : the archipelago is particularly exposed to extreme climatic phenomena forming in the Pacific Ocean.
Our association has already in the past worked with Filipino militant organizations engaged in both emergency aid towards affected communities as well as in long-term actions for rehabilitation and reconstruction.
We are initiating now a new solidarity campaign which should go on at least until the end of the year.
We will provide information regularly regarding this campaign, how the situation is evolving, as well as on fundamental issues raised by the multiplication of extreme climatic phenomena and the criminal unpreparedness of the authorities.
For now, we are launching an urgent appeal for financial solidarity.
