January 29, 2014 - Twenty-two families whose houses were totally destroyed caused by tropical depression Agaton at the second week of January 2014 received food packs with 8 items in it from Liga ng Makabagong Kabataan and Lig-on ug Hiniusang Kusog sa Kabus-Dakbayan, a youth and urban poor organization in Iligan City respectively. Both organizations are partner organizations of MiHANDs.
Survivors were from Sitio Kaplag and Sitio Merila, Ubaldo de Laya, Iligan City that have survived typhoon Sendong last year 2011.
The survivors stayed right now along the Circumferential Road (C3), a national highway connecting Iligan-Lanao del Norte-Bukidnon areas after the incident.
The purpose of the event is not only to distribute the food packs but also there was a consultation and demands identification among the survivors themselves and to what agencies are those demands to address and also including their recommendations for themselves and to other intervening institutions.
To mention a few demands are: financial or material support for house construction since they already have talked to a nearby land owner to allow them construct houses, medical assistance/regular medical community check-up, electricity service, livelihood assistance and some more.
It was recommended by the survivors to organize themselves and develop the workshop results into a demand letter reflecting what they need temporarily and for the long term.
Follow up activities will be the profiling per family of the survivors, psychosocial activities for children and women, herbal medicine making, orientation on IDP Rights and among other capability building trainings.
MiHANDs-Iligan City will also be intervening to other areas affected in the coming days in partnership also with Iligan Survivors’ Movement, the Sendong survivors organization and will also be dealing with still
