Since the first week of June, this year, dengue fever broke out with new dimension in Bangladesh. In previous years the people could understand that it might be dengue by symptom but this year it is difficult to identify without medical examination.
Dengue is actually a special mosquito borne diseases. The mosquito is called ades. If this mosquito bites anyone, he or she will be infected with high fever. Later appearance of blood in the eye and strain of blood in the skin are shown. The fever lasts three or four days making the body so weak. Death incident was rare.
This year dengue has come with resistance. Firstly, it causes death and there is no symptom apart from high fever. People used to take paracetamol or higher antibiotics to kill the virus. That was enough in the past. This year it is not enough. The fever goes away but after a few days they face the shock of dengue. It means they face the reduction of platelets in the blood. The normal range of platelets is 150000 to 400000. However, in case of dengue shock it comes down below 150000. If it is below the range, the fresh blood of patients comes from different parts of the body including eyes, mouth and noses. Besides, the patient can receive a heart attack or brain stroke in case of lower levels of platelets. These are all dangerous which causes death incident. Very few patients can recover from this situation. So they need earlier treatment and examination. The examination is very costly, which the poor people cannot afford, and turn to taboo types of treatments, for which there is no medical justification.
Because of dengue outbreak so far more than 100000 people are affected, more than 100 are death cases, more than 10000 are undergoing treatment at different medicals. In case of death, number of children are higher.
The dengue fever first started in Dhaka City, then it spreads in all 64 districts. No district spares from dengue. A panicky situation is prevailing in the whole country.
In order to kill the Aedes mosquito, the role of the government is mysterious. They said they spread pesticide against Aedes mosquitoes. But no effective result is found. However, they asked hospitals and clinics to take fixed amount of TK.500/- for the dengue test. Their medicals and clinics initially started the business taking TK 7000 to Tk.10000/- for dengue test. Now they follow the instruction of the government, but they do only the test of dengue presence. It is a test called NS1. It is positive then there is dengue. If it is negative, there is no dengue. Whereas this test is not enough they need to know the rate of platelets in the blood otherwise patient can face dengue shock. When the fever is reducing the dengue, test may show negative but if the rate of platelets goes below the minimum range dengue shock is a must although the test result is negative. That is why they need both tests for which they need Tk.1200/-
Bangladesh Krishok Federation and it allied organizations have many members in the urban areas who are suffering dengue but cannot take treatment or get tested due to want of money. The organization decided to support them with two tests which are relevant to be cured from dengue.
We want to support up to 500 members of the organization in the cities. As each needs Tk.1200/- for 500 patients we need 1200/-X500=Tk. 600000/-.
As the organization does not have much financial capacity we ask our different outside friends, well-wishers and organizations to stand by the dengue affected people to save their lives. If we can stand by them in their difficult circumstances, they will be grateful to the organization and be radicalized in term of confidence building.
Therefore, we fervently request you to give your kind support to share of the efforts made in order to coupe with the dengue disaster at national level.
Thanking you
Badrul Alam
