The current coup is a setback to the advancement made by the courageous Sudanese people in the 2019 Sudanese Revolution that overthrown the 30-year-old authoritarian rule of Omar al-Bashir after months of protests. The Transitional Military Council which took over power after the ouster of Omar al-Bashir, has shown from time to time of its unwillingness to hand over power to democratic civilian rule, including its brutal crime in the Khartoum massacre that killed at least 128 people in June 2019. Now the Sudanese military has revealed its true nature by breaking its promise in the power-sharing deal for the 39-month transition to democracy. Dozens of people have been killed in the last few days for protesting against the military coup.
Despite brutal repression, the people of Sudan continue their resistance against the military rule with strong determination to reclaim democracy. The struggle of the Sudanese people against the military dictatorship is also a struggle for social justice and people’s democratic control over the natural wealth and resources of the country which have been plundered by imperialist powers and their local collaborators.
We call upon the international community, including governments all over the world and international organizations to take a strong stance against the military dictatorship in Sudan.
We stand in solidarity with the people of Sudan in their relentless fight for democracy, social justice and the right to determine their own future.
