Under the chairmanship of Comrade Badrul Alam, President of Bangladesh Krishok Federation, and under moderation of Zayed Iqbal Khan, General Secretary of Bangladesh Krishok Federation, freedom fighter labor leader Abul Hossain, Central Leader of Workers Party of Bangladesh, AAM Fayez Hossain, General Secretary, Bangladesh Workers Federation, labor leader Baharane Sultan Bahar, Jago Bangladesh Garment Workers Federation, Sramik Netri Lovely Yasmin, President, Readymade Garments Workers Federation, Asha Moni, Publicity Secretary, Bangladesh Kishani Sabha, Rehena Begum, Vice-President, Bangladesh Krishok Federation, Shahabuddin Matubbar and Jahangir Hossain, President and General Secretary respectively, Dhaka City Unit ofBangladesh Krishok Federation, student leader of Kabi Nazrul University College, Masud Paravez, student leader of Darul Najad Chiddikia Kamil Madrasa KM Mohiuddin Helali, among others, addressed the rally.

In the gathering, Comrade Badrul Alam stressed the importance of making the tax system of Bangladesh fair and said that the entire tax system should be adjusted to make the transition from the existing backward tax system to the progressive tax system. By progressive taxation he means higher taxes on those with higher incomes and lower taxes on those with lower incomes. Moreover he laid emphasis on widening and strengthening the scope of taxation by imposing wealth tax. He termed Value Added Tax (MUSAC) or VAT as unfair, saying that VAT has been imposed on everyone universally and at different levels due to which the rich get special benefits and the poor suffer. He demanded an end to the unfair VAT system. Speakers present at the rally said that the unfair tax system has brought great disaster to public life. People are becoming pauperized by paying taxes at every level of the buying and selling and supply chain. This unfair tax system is reproducing poverty and hunger in the society. They urged the government to exempt women and children from taxation.

Leaders call on the United Nations to promulgate a universal tax justice charter.
The leaders also demanded an end to tax evasion and tax holidays by domestic and international companies. They also said that the big companies and the super rich did not stop with tax evasion, they also illegally smuggled the country’s wealth abroad and built cars and homes. Malaysia’s MSH (My Second Home) and Canada’s Begum Para are prime examples. The leaders demanded an end to money laundering through so-called tax havens.

Some concrete demands:

1) Want an end to income inequality

2) Tax the rich, not the poor

3) Abolish the universal VAT system

4) Introduce progressive VAT system

সমাবেশে কমরেড বদরুল আলম বাংলাদেশের কর ব্যবস্থাকে ন্যয্যতার রূপ দেয়ার প্রতি গুরুত্ব আরোপ করে বলেন বিদ্যমান পশ্চাৎপদ কর ব্যবস্থাকে প্রগতিশীল কর ব্যবস্থায় উত্তরণ ঘটাতে গোটা কর ব্যবস্থাকে ঢালাওভাবে সাজাতে হবে। প্রগতিশীল কর ব্যবস্থা বলতে তিনি যাদের বেশী আয় তাদের উপর বেশি কর আর যাদের কম আয় তাদের উপর কম কর ধার্য্য করা বুঝিয়েছেন। অধিকন্ত তিনি সম্পদ কর আরোপ করে করের আওতা সম্প্রসারিত ও শক্তিশালী করার উপর গুরুত্ব আরোপ করের। তিনি মূল্য সংযোজন কর(মূসক)বা ভ্যাটকে বেইনসাফী আখ্যা দিয়ে বলেন, ভ্যাট সকলের উপর নির্বিচারে ও বিভিন্ন স্তরে আরোপ করা হয়েছে ফলে ধনিরা বিশেষ সুবিধা পাচ্ছে ও গরীবরা ভোগান্তির স্বীকার হচ্ছে। তিনি অন্যায্য ভ্যাট পদ্ধতির অবসান দাবী করেন। সমাবেশে উপস্থিত বক্তারা বলেন, অন্যায্য কর ব্যবস্থা জনজীবনে চরম দূর্গতি বয়ে এনেছে। জনগণ ক্রয়বিক্রয় ও সরবরাহ শেখলের প্রতিটি স্তরে কর প্রদান করে সর্বস্বান্ত হচ্ছে। এ অন্যায্য কর ব্যবস্থা সমাজে দারিদ্র্য ও ক্ষুধার পূনরউৎপাদন করছে। তারা নারী ও শিশুদের করের আওতা মুক্ত করার জন্য সরকারের কাছে আহ্বান জানান।
নেতৃবৃন্দ জাতিসংঘকে সর্বজনীন কর ন্যয্যতা সনদ ঘোষণার উদাত্ত আহবান জানাম।
নেতৃবৃন্দ দেশীয় ও আন্তর্জাতিক কোম্পানিগুলোর কর ফাঁকি বন্ধ ও কর অবকাশ বাতিল করারও দাবী জানান। তারা আরো বলেন, বড় বড় কোম্পানি ও অতিধনীরা কর ফাঁকি দিয়েই ক্ষান্ত হয় নি তারা দেশের সম্পদ বিদেশে অবৈধভাবে পাচার করে গাড়ি বাড়ি গড়েছে। মালয়েশিয়ার এমএসএইচ(মাই সেকেন্ড হোম) ও কানাডার বেগম পাড়া এর প্রকৃষ্ট উদাহরণ। নেতৃবৃন্দ ট্যাক্স হেভেন বা ’করস্বর্গ’ বলে কথিত দেশেগুলোর মাধ্যমে অর্থ পাচার বন্ধ করার দাবী জানান।
দাবী সমূহঃ
১) আয় বৈষম্য অবসান চাই।
২)ধনীর উপর কর আরোপ করো,গরীবের উপর নয়।
৩)সর্বজনীন ভ্যাট প্রথা বাতিল করো।
৪)প্রগতিশীল ভ্যাট প্রথা চালু করো।
