On the occasion of the International Labour Conference of the ILO (International Labour Organization), the undersigned labour organisations call for a gathering in front of ILO head office in Geneva, on Friday 7th June 2024.
Our organisations hereby denounce firmly against the recent brutal and widespread repression undertaken by the authorities of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and in particular:
– The terrifying and shocking number of capital punishments, including more than sixty during the last two weeks of April alone.
– The ceaseless repression of women refusing to wear the veil,
We are also protesting against the announced participating at the International Labour Conference of people designated by the regime to represent employees.
The Islamic Republic of Iran has refused to ratify several fundamental conventions of the ILO, including those concerning the freedom of association, the protection of union rights and collective negotiation (ILO Conventions 87 and 98).
However, nothing justifies the behaviour of the Iranian government to violate the basics norms. Indeed, the 1998 Declaration “obligates Member States to respect and promote” these norms, “whether or not they have ratified the corresponding conventions”.
And all the more so since all these violations are taking place while the government of Iran is part of the Governing Body of the International labour Office.
Iran is also a signatory to two other international treaties which in particular protect the right of association, of unionising, and of contacting end meeting the trade-unions of the other countries:
– International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), article 22; and
– International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR), article 8.
The Iranian regime represses, nevertheless, dozens of workers and teachers for the only “crimes” of exercising their basic rights protected by the above treaties signed by Iranian government itself.
We call a gathering for :
Friday 7th June, 2024, from 12 p.m. in Geneva
in front of the Palais des Nations - “La Chaise” –
- Against the widespread repression by the Iranian regime,
– To support detainees, including in particular trade unionists and teachers,
– To demand their immediate release.
