ANOTHER WORLD IS POSSIBLE, ANOTHER UNITED STATES IS NECESSARY!!
As US Presidential Elections Near and Economic Crisis Grows,
the Poor of the United States Demand Economic Human Rights, Not War!!
Poor People’s Economic Human Rights Campaign (PPEHRC) Holds Actions Across the USA for the Global Day of Action on January 26, 2008
As a part of the Global Day of Action on January 26, 2008, poor and homeless families belonging to the Poor People’s Economic Human Rights Campaign (PPEHRC) will be holding actions across the United States to demand the Human Right to Housing, and to demand “Money for Economic Human Rights Not War!” PPEHRC actions will celebrate the 60th anniversary year of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, while highlighting the widespread violations of Economic Human Rights in the richest country in the world. (See WSF2008 website (PPEHRC Action Page) or www.economichumanrights.org)
The Week of Global Action falls exactly one year before the day that George W. Bush will be stepping down as U.S. president on January 20, 2009. PPEHRC’s activities for the Global Day of Action are a part of the PPEHRC’s massive organizing of the poor of all races across the U.S. to join PPEHRC’s national March for Our Lives during this year’s presidential elections here in the U.S. On September 2nd, 2008, the PPEHRC will lead the March for Our Lives: Money for Health Care Not for War during the Republican National Convention here in Minnesota.
PPEHRC has organized the largest marches of the poor and homeless during the past two Republican National Conventions, in which George W. Bush was nominated as the Republican Party’s presidential candidate. PPEHRC’s Global Day of Action events and this fall’s March For Our Lives will highlight the lack of serious attention to poverty in the USA in the US presidential campaign, and tie the issues of poverty, homelessness and the denial of health care to millions of people in the US, with poverty and war caused by the US government around the world.
At a press conference last week in Minnesota, where the Republican presidential candidate will be chosen in September, PPEHRC organizations from across the country announced Global Day of Action events led by poor families, public housing residents, immigrants, hip hop artists, students and others in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Chicago, Illinois, Minneapolis, Minnesota, Cleveland, Ohio; Louisville, Kentucky; Ann Arbor, Michigan; Iowa; Salt Lake City, Utah; San Jose, California and in other locations across the United States.
The PPEHRC will also use the Day of Global Action to draw attention to the cases of two PPEHRC leaders who are facing trial on February 27th, following their arrests in December while protesting the demolition of thousands of units of public housing in New Orleans. PPEHRC National Coordinator Cheri Honkala, PPEHRC organizer J.R. Flemming and a journalist were unlawfully arrested fighting for the Human Right to Housing for Hurricane Katrina victims in New Orleans shortly before Christmas. They face false federal charges and the possibility of 5 -10 years in prison.
