Comrades, friends,
Given the news coming from Haiti, our concern continues to grow for the needs of the people there and the militarization of the humanitarian responses.
As Jubilee South, we believe that our help must be both immediate and continuing over the medium term. We need to act in each country and globally to address the “humanitarian invasion”, pressing to finally cancel the outstanding debt claims against Haiti and to ensure that cooperation is given on the basis of the full participation of the Haitian people and respect for their sovereignty and rights. In that sense, find attached copy of the letter to be delivered on Monday in Montreal, expressing our views and grievances before the ministerial meeting to prepare the conference of “donors” to Haiti in March. Other initiatives will follow in the coming days and we count on your active support.
Our material contribution can be directed to cooperate with the work of PAPDA and the organizations with which they coordinate. Specifically we propose to “adopt” PAPDA as our target for immediate reconstruction, channeling to our comrades there, the financial resources, and any other form of assistance, we are able to provide.
We know there is still an urgent need for many humanitarian essentials, but it is also urgent that popular organizations in Haiti are able to rebuild their ongoing operational functions. For that, we must help to ensure that they have a place to work with all the basics, such as computers, power generator, communications, mobility, etc..
As Jubilee South, we would thus propose that in each country we seek to promote solidarity and to contribute to the work of PAPDA. They are already coordinating responses with a group of organizations including SOFA (World March of Women), PODHDD (Platform of Human Rights organizations) ICKL, ITECA, and others. They already have two health centers up and running, and we await a fuller report of their actions and needs, from the mission of Dominican organizations that just returned from Port-au-Prince, in which JS members and closely related organizations such as Via Campesina, the Cry of the Excluded, the Alliance of Inhabitants, Compa, the Assembly of Caribbean People, etc, all participated.
Camille was able to confirm today the details of a bank account that PAPDA has set up to channel international solidarity. Those details, as well as updated contact information for Camille and the rest of PAPDA follow below.
We believe that Haiti can overcome this situation as a free and sovereign people. It’s in the hands of every one of us to do everything possible to support them. It would be good also that we exchange information among us on the actions that are mabeing taken. As Camille has said, “... we never needed you more!”. Together we will respond to their need.
With a warm embrace,
Sandra Quintela and Beverly Keene
