The Emergency Ordinance (EO) 6 have been released today after they were detained since July 2 for undefined charges during the Bersih 2.0 crackdown.
It is understood that they were released at 5.30pm at the Jinjang police station, following public outrage and sustained protests over their arbitrary detention.
The six Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) members - Choo Chon Kai, Sarat Babu, M Sarasvathy, M Sukumaran, A Letchumanan and Sungai Siput parliamentarian Dr Jeyakumar Devaraj - were initially detained on suspicion of planning to wage war against the King.
It was learnt that the charge was however changed several times, at one point accusing them of being ringleaders of the Bersih 2.0 rally on July 9.
In a short statement issued to the media, inspector-general of police Ismail Omar confirmed the release of the six from detention under the EO.
“Following their release, further action will be determined by the attorney-general’s chambers,” he said in a two-paragraph statement.
When contacted, PSM secretary-general S Arutchelvan and their lawyer Edmund Bon confirmed that the six were released at 5.30pm.
Dear comrades,
6 members of Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM), Dr. Jeyakumar Devaraj (MP for Sungai Siput), M. Saraswathy (Deputy Chairperson of PSM), Sugumaran (Central Comittee Member of PSM), Letchumanan (PSM Sungai Sput Branch Secretary), Saratbabu (Chairman of PSM Youth) and myself, was released unconditionally on 29 July 2011, after 27 days of detention under Emergency Ordinance (EO) and 7 days remand prior to EO detention. We were detained when Malaysian police attempted to stop a huge rally for electoral reform on 9 July 2011, but it was proven failed.
We would like to thank all the comrades who have given your support and call for our release.
I would like to apologize for not ale to attend or respond to all your emails during my detention. I will try to reply to any e-mail that needed our response.
Thank you.
In solidarity,
Choo Chon Kai

Jeyakumar had yesterday began his hunger strike yesterday, putting additional pressure on the police.
When contacted, PSM secretary-general S Arutchelvan and their lawyer Edmund Bon confirmed that the six were released at 5.30pm.
In an immediate response to the release of the PSM 6, DAP advisor Lim Kit Siang said the authorities should take responsibility for detaining the six with bad intentions.
“Informed PSM6 released by police. Victory of people n reason. Hishammuddin/IGP shld apologise 4mala fide detention. Najib shld repeal EO,” he said on a Twitter posting.
The PSM 6 later appeared in a ’victory celebration’ at 7.30pm at the KL-Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall.

Confirmed Dr. Jeyakumar on Hunger Strike! Others may follow!
29 Jul 2011
EO6
After waiting for hours in anxiety, we were finally notified by DSP Muhammad Razali that Dr. Jeyakumar has declined lunch and dinner and his condition is said to be ok as of 9.35pm on 28 July 2001 and that he is being monitored. With this information, it is clear now that Dr. Jeyakumar is on hunger strike and he has stated that he will only stop once the Government release all the 6 detainees currently held under the draconian Emergency Ordinance – another detention without trial legislation.
We have reached a very crucial part of this campaign to seek the release of the EO6. Though the police can detain someone for 60 days but the EO allows for a review within 30days which will end on 31 July 2011. We will also make it clear that the Home Minister is entitled to revoke this order and any time. We therefore call upon the Home Minister Datuk Hishamuddin to use his powers to immediately release the six without conditions.
The detention of the PSM EO six is unjustified and this can be reflected at the nightly candle light vigil all over the country. The huge number of organizations locally and internationally opposes this arrest and have called for the release. Politicians from both the ruling and opposition parties have called for the immediate release. It is therefore not in the interest of the Government to detain the six further.
In any circumstances, if the Government plans to continue to remand the six against the popular sentiment, PSM and other groups would be intensifying the campaign to demand for their immediate release. We believe that more Malaysians will be joining Dr. Jeyakumar in this hunger strike to call for the release.
