As the 2012 Seoul Nuclear Security Summit(hereafter the Seoul Summit) will be held on March 26th 27th, the Korean civil society is calling for common actions against the Seoul Summit and international solidarity for the nuclear free world.
The Korean civil society including NGOs for peace, environment, labor and hibakusha and progressive political parties has formed the People’s Action Against 2012 Seoul Nuclear Security Summit. It is because the Seoul Summit is a remarkable forum held with 50 participants including national leaders from 47 countries worldwide and international representatives from UN, EU and IAEA. However, its agendas mainly focus on anti nuclear terrorism and safety of nuclear plants, but it neither discusses the nuclear free world nor reflects the lessons from the Fukushima nuclear disaster.
The Nuclear Security Summit agendas do not compatible with the nuclear free world!
As might be well known, the Washington Summit in 2010, which was initially held by the US President Obama, mainly dealt with cooperative measures for combating nuclear terrorism, protecting nuclear materials and related facilities, and preventing illicit trafficking of nuclear materials.
The South Korean government is the host country of the second summit, the 2012 Seoul Nuclear Security Summit. It focuses on promoting nuclear industry as inviting nuclear industry CEOs worldwide to hold the Nuclear Industry Summit in parallel as well as security of nuclear. It seems obvious that it pursues an opportunity to promote nuclear power plant for export.
On the other hand, the Fukushima nuclear disaster, following Hiroshima, Nagasaki and Chernobyl disasters gave all of us on the planet lessons. A nuclear accident could impose a threat to people’s safety and result in a greater calamity than any other wars. It must be said not ‘security of nuclear’, but abolition of all the kinds of nuclear including plant and weapons.
Nuclear Free World : No nuclear plants, No nuclear weapons!
As reflecting the Fukushima nuclear disaster, we, the Korea civil society strongly urges the Seoul Summit to deal with ‘safety of people from nuclear’ rather than ‘nuclear security’. We also insist the necessity of regional cooperation for the ways towards the nuclear free world with abolishing nuclear weapons and phasing out nuclear plants. Nuclear disarmament, which is one of the urgent tasks for the nuclear free world, should be also on the table at the Seoul Summit.
The People’s Action Against 2012 Seoul Nuclear Security Summit aims
– to raise issues on abolishing nuclear weapons and phasing out plants,
– to present the accountabilities and responsibilities of the nuclear-have countries and nuclear mafias,
– to campaign for people’s safety from any nuclear, and
– to publicize the Nuclear Free Northeast Asia
Common Actions in March are as below:
– Action Days : 19th 27th of March 2012
– 19th 27th : Campaigns for nuclear free world
– 22nd : International Forum and anti nuclear festival
– 23rd 24th : General Assembly of Hibakusha
– 25th : People Assembly for the Nuclear Free World
– 26th 27th : Actions against the Seoul Summit
★ More actions are being planned and any suggestions are welcomed.
NOW ACT TOGETHER for the Nuclear Free World!
We warmly invite the international community and people who want to make a change and take a part in anti-nuclear campaigns and actions against the Seoul Summit as well as making suggestions for campaigns and issue-raising actions. We hope that we can act with anti-nuclear activists worldwide to facilitate ’world without nuclear’ when Fukushima disaster inspires anti-nuclear spirits more broadly and profoundly than ever before.
We will be looking forward to your replies and any comments before Feb 1st (reply: Jungeun Park, peace pspd.org).
