Dear Comrades,
We are writing on behalf of Solidarity, a socialist, feminist, anti-racist organization in the United States, to express our support for S. Matsas and K. Moutzouris in their struggle against Golden Dawn’s campaign of violence and hate. We call upon the Greek court to immediately dismiss the charges against S. Matsas and K. Moutzouris and recognize their right to educate the Greek people about the dangers of fascist organizations like Golden Dawn.
We understand that S. Matsas, Secretary General of the Revolutionary Workers’ Party (EEK) of Greece, has been charged with inciting violence, disrupting the peace, and defamation of Golden Dawn in relation to an EEK leaflet published for an anti-fascist demonstration in 2009 [1]. Moutzouris has been similarly targeted for allowing Indymedia to use the internet servers at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), where he was recently Dean.
We are distressed to see that the racist violence and terror incited by Golden Dawn members and supporters continues with tacit approval from government and police officials, while anti-fascist leaders like S. Matsas are brought to trial on fabricated charges. These actions by the Greek government signal the deepening of the emergency state which threatens the civil liberties and freedoms of the Greek people.
We commend S. Matsas and K Mourzouris for their courage in the face of repression and stand with all those resisting fascism and fighting for a more just and egalitarian Greek society.
In Struggle,
The National Committee of Solidarity, August 29, 2013
