GWTUC president Montu Ghosh threatened of launching a tougher and wider movement if their seven leaders were not released unconditionally.
The union leaders alleged that their leaders were sent to jail when they were waging a movement demanding monthly Tk 16,000 as minimum wage for apparel workers.
The union leaders suspected hands of the government and the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association at play behind sending them to jail in order to stop the ongoing movement for hiking the minimum wage.
They said that their movement for establishing workers’ rights would never be stopped by detaining its leaders.
GWTUC vice-president Ziaul Kabir Khokon chaired the rally while Garment Sramik Adhikar Andolan leader Mahbubur Rahman Ismail, among others, expressed solidarity.
Leaders of the Communist Party of Bangladesh and the Socialist Party of Bangladesh at a discussion at CPB office in the capital condemned sending the labour leaders to jail, said a release.
CPB Ppresident Mujahidul Islam Selim and SBP general secretary Khalekuzzaman, among others, spoke.
A Dhaka court on Sunday sent GWTUC general secretary Joly Talukder, organising secretary KM Mintu, international affairs secretary Monzur Moin, Gazipur district unit general secretary Jalal Hawlader, Savar-Ashulia unit president Lutfar Rahman and central committee members Shahajahan and Sajedur Rahman to jail in a case filed over attacking and assaulting BGMEA employees on January 31.
