The Frontline Socialist Party (FSP) said yesterday (11) that a temporary consensus government must be formed in order to achieve some of the primary demands of the people’s struggle.

“Our proposals are centred around two things: One is that the public struggle must continue until its demands are met. Many groups are involved in the struggle regardless of party affiliations. As the FSP, we are active in this struggle and we will also continue in it until the people’s struggles are victorious.

“While that is going on, a temporary consensus Government must be formed. This is formed with the struggle. Whether we like it or not, we need to take action under the current Parliamentary system, in order to achieve some of the primary demands of this struggle,” FSP General Secretary Kumar Gunaratnam said at a media briefing held yesterday.

However, Gunaratnam stressed that the necessary condition to form such a Government should be the resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

“This temporary Government must only last for six months. Whoever leads that temporary Government must not break the consensus,” he added.

Furthermore, he said that a new, people-centred Constitution must be brought in by this temporary Government, which has to be approved by a referendum of the people.

“We are demanding this, because the struggle calls for, not just for the President to go home, but also for his seat or the office of the Executive President to also go home,” he said, noting that it is the primary responsibility of the temporary, consensus government.

Gunaratnam said that these proposals will be presented to all political parties, both within and outside the Parliament, especially to the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP)-led National People’s Power (NPP), the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL), trade unions and civil society organisations.
