The enormous sums of money spent every day on war could have been invested in the welfare of the very children women are so actively encouraged to give birth to. Yet the Russian authorities see the solution to the demographic problem not in an early end to the war, not in stabilizing the economy or reorganizing the social sphere, but solely in increasing the reproductive pressure on women.
