The South-Western and South-Eastern districts, Khulna, Bagerhat, Satkhira, Patuakhali, Barisal, Barguna, Jhalokati, Pirojpur, Chittagong are the worst affected.
Over 800,000 people from the worst affected areas were moved into the different cyclone shelters. But most of the people in the affected areas remained in their houses. As a result, more than 20 people died and hundreds of thousands of people were wounded. The loss of properties is enormous. Village people, who are mostly peasants, have lost their agricultural instruments, cattle, goats, houses, standing crops, fishes, trees, trees with fruits, etc. Their utensils have been washed by water surges. The possible loss in monetary value is Tk. 200 billion.
The water surge was remarkable. Many areas are still submerged. The people who took shelter in the cyclone center could not return home yet because of water logging at different places.
The affected people are living in uncertainty because they have a lack of food, medicines and doctors. UNICEF is trying to deal with this aspect but it is only a drop in the ocean.
The government initiative is quite relevant in such a crucial moment. However, so far, it is seen that the district authority is still occupied with assessment of the damages. Let’s hope that the government will address this issue properly.
Bangladesh Krishok Federation has its organizational base in Patuakhali, Bhola, Satkhira, Khulna, Jhalokati, Barisal, Barguna and Pirojpur. However, we decided to focus on Patuakhali district where we have four occupied Chars (Island) which are terribly affected. They lost all what is needed for agricultural rehabilitation, especially concerning the seed support. Consequently, we decided to give them relief support that is more important than any other thing now.
A group of leaders of BKF is already in that district showing gestures to the affected people and trying to help them restore their normal life. Even so, we know that it is not enough. We have to stand by them with humanitarian support. That is why we are trying to raise funds in different ways.
Therefore, we would fervently request our international friends, well-wishers and sympathizers to contribute to our fundraising activities. We would be grateful to you for your support.

Update 29 May, 2024:
Our team has already distributed dried food among the victims. This team is mainly working in 4 Chars where our landless people have been residing for the last 31 years after the occupation in 1993. They made a primary assessment on the loss and damage due to cyclone Rimal. During the cyclone, the water level was at 8 feet high in the Chars. Most of the residents took shelter in the cyclone centers. Except for the houses which are built by bricks, houses have been destroyed. Most of their components were washed away by the water surge. Moreover, all buffalos, cows, goats, poultry, crops, utensils, green vegetables, fishes in the ponds, fruits trees, preserved seeds, etc. were also washed away.
The loss is enormous and it will take the landless people time to recover. They have to build their houses again and to collect all other agrarian inputs. In order to stand on their own food feet, they need financial support from the government. For this, they decided to give a presentation to the Divisional authority depicting their woes and agonies, so as to get support from the government. However, now they need food to survive. We have given dried food on an emergency basis, but soon we will give them relief items so that they can cook and eat on their own. The monetary value of property loss in 4 Chars is approximately BDT 50 million.
