During production maintenance, the victim was cleaning hardened Mate fluid on the londer (fluid channel). Marjan Daud was pushing the hardened mass at the end of the fluid channel by himself using his hand when his glove became caught on the mass, which weighed approximately 150 kilograms, and it struck the right side of his head.
The tragedy that befell Marjan proves how decrepit the Health and Safety System is, which has not been seriously addressed by the owner of the PT. IMIP (Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park) area. This incident has also been condemned by SPIM-KPBI.
The Daily Chairman of SPIM-KPBI, Komang Jordi, criticised that his party has not seen concrete steps from management, as workers are continually falling victim to production activities. “I consider that the company has failed and committed genocide against workers due to the chaotic health and safety system. Worse still, just hours after the incident, the production process resumed,” he criticised. SPIM-KPI collectively continues to demand that PT. IMIP provide justice for Marjan Daud and improve the health and safety system to ensure protection for all workers so that there are no further casualties.
SOLIDARITY FROM PEREMPUAN MAHARDHIKA
Perempuan Mahardhika, a women’s organisation that upholds the protection and justice for workers, has also voiced their opinion on this incident. Perempuan Mahardhika expressed deep condolences to the family of the workplace accident victim.
Vivi Widyawati from Perempuan Mahardhika stated that they condemn both PT IMIP and the Indonesian Ministry of Manpower for neglecting the safety and health of workers employed at all tenants in PT. IMIP. “Working conditions at PT IMIP are very poor and pose a high risk for any worker to experience workplace accidents. PT IMIP must take responsibility by providing appropriate compensation to the victim and the victim’s family and implementing a decent work system.”
“Not only that, PT IMIP is also responsible for paying decent wages, reducing working hours, fulfilling the rights of female workers, and implementing health and safety standards in accordance with ILO standards,” she asserted.
Perempuan Mahardhika is committed to working together with labour unions in Morowali to oversee demands to PT IMIP. Perempuan Mahardhika will also continue to fight for justice and protection for female workers.
