This summer, Iran’s Supreme Court upheld the death sentence handed down to trade unionist and women’s rights defender Sharifeh Mohammadi on charges of “armed rebellion against the state”.
Yet, Sharifeh Mohammadi’s actions have always remained within the framework of the laws in force in Iran. She is guilty only of tirelessly defending human rights, women’s rights, and workers’ rights.
During her detention, Sharifeh Mohammadi has been deprived of the fundamental prisoners’ rights, such as visits and phone calls. For a long time, she was denied family visits and was not allowed to contact them by telephone. She was even prevented from attending her trial and from defending herself before the Supreme Court.
She is facing a judicial system determined to convict her because of her membership in the Coordinating Committee to help form workers’ organizations.
The trade union organizations CFDT, CGT, UNSA, Solidaires, and FSU join the efforts of the International Trade Union Confederation to urge the Iranian government to overturn Sharifeh’s death sentence and drop all charges against her.
The same demand is made regarding all trade unionists and other human rights defenders detained
for exercising their rights protected by ILO Conventions and international covenants.
Sharifeh Mohammadi’s case is unfortunately not an isolated one: as of September 2, more than 863
people have been executed since January 1, including at least 50 for their militant engagement.
The CFDT, CGT, UNSA, Solidaires, and FSU denounce this appalling escalation and the use of the death penalty as a tool of political repression. They condemn these attacks on human life and dignity.
Since the bombings in June by the armies of Israel and the United States of America, followed by
threats of renewed clashes, the social situation has been deteriorating rapidly.
The ruling regime has taken advantage of the war to considerably intensify repression against opponents, accusing them of being agents of Israel or the USA: for example, more than 250 executions have taken place since the June bombings, and heavy sentences are handed down every day.
Foreign military intervention has reduced the space for protest, and the government is attempting to stifle the expression of discontent.
Cancellation of Sharifeh Mohammadi’s death sentence!
Immediate release of Sharifeh Mohammadi and all human rights defenders!
Abolition of the death penalty in Iran
