Federal deputy Sâmia Bomfim (PSOL-SP) and Santos councillor Débora Camilo (PSOL) denounce a serious “deviation of purpose in granting export licences” and regret that the operation was authorised “without proper risk scrutiny regarding the military use of the goods”. The recipient company, they emphasise, is “recognised as a supplier to the Israeli military industry, with strong activity in contexts of serious allegations of human rights violations.”
The representation requests the opening of a civil inquiry to verify the legality of the export licence, as well as requesting precautionary measures to prevent the cargo from leaving the Port of Santos [4] until investigations are concluded. The parliamentarians also seek civil, administrative and, where applicable, criminal accountability for the public and private agents involved.
This initiative by PSOL parliamentarians adds to a series of progressive movements in favour of ending commercial relations with Israel. On 29 May 2025, Fernanda Melchionna (PSOL-RS) and Sâmia Bomfim led the coordination of an open letter to President Lula [5], with support from artists, intellectuals and parliamentarians, demanding the severing of diplomatic, commercial, military and technological relations with the Israeli state.
Simultaneously, personalities such as Chico Buarque [6], Carol Proner and Vladimir Safatle signed a letter organised by the BDS movement, asking Brazil to suspend military and commercial agreements with Israel – including the free trade treaty – and apply an energy embargo. A manifesto by intellectuals including Marilena Chauí [7], Vladimir Safatle and Paulo Sérgio Pinheiro [8], published in July 2025, reinforced the need to suspend such commercial and military relations, recalling embargoes already adopted by other European countries in response to what they describe as genocide.
These initiatives reinforce that Brazil should follow its progressive vocation and commit to international justice – not only in pronouncements, but in concrete actions. As Fernanda Melchionna stated, “it is unacceptable that Brazil continues maintaining commercial and diplomatic relations with a genocidal state. Sitting idle in the face of what is happening in Palestine is being complicit with barbarism. We need to follow the example of other countries, break with Israel and place ourselves on the right side of history”.
