On Sept 30 at 3pm after 27 hours of illegal confinement at Artillery Maidan Police Station Karachi the 11 left protesters, including Riaz Ahmed and Ali Hassan of Intl Socialists Karachi, arrested on Sept 29 for demanding rejection of Gen Musharraf’s candidature as President were released from Preedy Police Station Karachi, about 3km from Maidan Police Station. The Sept 29 protest was called by Peoples Movement for Justice Karachi, a coalition of left, progressive, ngos, trade unions and civil society organisations. The released detainees were garlanded by scores of activists present there and they all went to join over 200 other protesters at Karachi Press Club to demand inquiry into the most brutal acts of police terror on Sept 29 in all major cities of the country. After the detention the govt kept the confinement secret and regularly announced on TV channels that the Karachi detainees, including 4 lawyers arrested separately, have been released. This was to confuse people who were to protest arrests the next day at 3pm.
Attached are photos of the 11 detainees showing great courage inside the filthy conditions of the lock-up at the police station. Over 400 people came to visit the activists and expressed their solidarity. The detained people were Riaz Ahmed, Ali Hasan, Ali Yavar, Manzoor Razi,Ayub Qureshi, Fraid Awan, Maroof Sultan, Ali Raza, Hasan Ailya, Asad Butt, Raheel Qazi.
