José Bové has once more been sentenced to four months in prison for uprooting genetically modified crops with a group of the “voluntary harvesters” [“Faucheurs volontaires”]. This leader of the small farmers’ union [Confederation paysanne] has already been imprisoned for the same “crime”. The government wants to make civil disobedience very expensive indeed, discourage any further action by the five or six thousand “Faucheurs” and demonstrate its alliance with corporate interests against the French people, three-quarters of whom have explicitly rejected GMOs. Along with the European Commission, the government seems determined to force us to import, plant and eat GMO crops. Not only are these potentially dangerous to human health but they contaminate the environment and destroy the ecological balance while eliminating the freedom of neighbouring farmers to produce uncontaminated organic food. The government also undoubtedly has in mind Bove’s possible political ambitions for the elections of 2007 when he could prove a popular left independent candidate for the presidency.
