To Korean Government
President Roh Moo-Hyun
Cheong Wa Dae (office of the President)
Republic of Korea
As of September 28, several offices of the Korean Government Employees Union (KGEU) which is member of the KCTU, have been surrounded by the
police -members of the union have been arrested; some trade unionists have
been wounded and a number of offices have been forcibly closed. This is part
of a massive nationwide government crack down to force the KGEU to close
down.
What is at stake is the right of workers in the public sector to have in a
trade union. The struggle to assert the right to unionise in the public
sector has been going on for a long time. But the repression has existed and
reached a peak this month of September.
We, participants in the Assembly of Social Movements meeting in Brussels,
from September 28th to October 1st 2006, express our solidarity with the
KGEU.
We urge the Korean Government to cease all acts of repression against the
trade union and to recognise the right of the union to exist and to
recognise the KGEU.
