We start the new year with a round figure of 31,000 euros.
Given the difficult circumstances, we can consider this a success. Indeed, international attention remains focused on other geopolitical issues (from Ukraine to the Middle East). Humanitarian disasters have become commonplace, and are rarely covered by the mainstream media. The cost-of-living crisis concerns us all. Maintaining “Asian” solidarity in these conditions is not self-evident, but such is the responsibility of our association. Thank you for helping us to fill it in.
We have just made a first series of transfers to our Asian partners. A total of five thousand euros has been sent to Bangladesh, Indonesia, Pakistan and the Philippines. Unfortunately, we have not yet been able to re-establish a functional communication with Myanmar (Burma).
In all these countries, multiple crisis factors are combining and succeeding one another. Their effects are cumulative, further weakening the social fabric. Over and above one-off responses to a specific humanitarian disaster (an earthquake, a devastating flood, a military conflict, etc.), the movements that we back must provide ongoing support to impoverished populations and contribute to their self-organization (a source of collective self-help). They must work with them to experiment with modes of production adapted to the consequences of climate change, and to strengthen their autonomy in the face of the stranglehold of established economic powers. They also need to address many other issues: community health, the rights of women and oppressed minorities, discriminations...
So, it’s not just a question of resisting the consequences of the global “polycrisis” head-on, but also of making progress and opening up new possibilities, so that the conditions of existence and struggle of people’s communities can be consolidated.
The situation varies between countries, and even between regions within the same country. Over the course of 2023, it may have worsened or improved, depending on the case, compared to what it was in 2022. The “positive” aspect of the actions undertaken throughout 2023 should not be underestimated!
Donations can be dedicated to a given country
If you would like your donations to be earmarked for a particular country, please let us know by specifying the country: Bangladesh, Indonesia, Pakistan, Philippines - we are currently unable to transfer donations to Myanmar (Burma).
If they are not earmarked, your contributions will be paid into the General Solidarity Fund
Regular and one-off donations
Monthly contributions (via bank transfer, HelloAsso or PayPal) are very useful to us.
They can, of course, be supplemented by one-off donations, in response to specific appeals in particular.
Small donations count
It turns out that some people decide not to send in a donation, believing it to be too small to “count” in relation to the needs. This is a mistake, because even small donations do “count”.
Fifteen donations of €30 add up to 450 euros, making it possible to “complete” a transfer of 1,000 euros.
Even donations of €10 “make sense”. More than just a “complementary” contribution (that should never be overlooked), they express political solidarity - and the scale of this solidarity makes sense for our partners in Asia (as well as for the ESSF team running this campaign).
Addresses
It is important to provide us with:
An e-mail address.
A postal address. If it’s not the one written on the check (for this payment method), don’t forget to indicate it!
Likewise, please ensure that your contact details are indicated on bank transfers. We sometimes receive donations without knowing from whom, or from what country...
Once again, thank you 31,000 times over for your support,
Adam Novak, Pierre Rousset
ESSF
Remember that our association operates without any form of remuneration, on an entirely militant basis. Thus 100% of donations received are transferred to their recipients. The costs associated with these transfers are mainly banking and kept to a minimum (less than 5%). We do not “export” our own projects. We help movements to respond to humanitarian, social and democratic emergencies, based on their involvement in the field and their own perception of priorities.
To send donations via ESSF
Donations can be given by cheques (in euros only, payable in France), direct bank transfers to our account or via Helloasso and PayPal. All payment options are listed on the home page of our website.
